A lot of people don’t know this, but it’s possible to delete duplicates in itunes without any special software or itunes plug-in. So if you are looking for a way on how to delete duplicates in itunes, then follow the steps for an easy way to delete duplicates in your itunes.
1.) Click on the “file” menu then “display duplicates” in itunes to show duplicates. This will show duplicate songs with the same song name and artist. If you have a live song and a studio version of the same song, it will also show up as a duplicate song. To fix this, click “file” menu then “display exact duplicates”. This will show duplicate songs with the same name, artist, and album.
2.) You should sort the date you added the songs to itunes by clicking on the “date added” column.
3.) To delete the older items in itunes, click the item with the oldest date, hold down the “shift” key on your keyboard, and then click on the older item next to the most current date. After doing that, to delete the duplicates in itunes, click “Edit” from the menu then “Delete”.
This is how you would normally delete duplicates in itunes. I honestly would not recommend this way of deleting duplicates since you are missing out on A LOT of duplicates you could delete if you use a third party software such as rinse my music. What do I mean by this?
If you are using the itunes software to delete duplicates, it will only delete duplicates by comparing the song title and the name of the artist. On the other hand, if you use a software such as rinse my music, it will compare the file itself and check if it matches the other files in your library which is the best way to find and delete duplicates. Give rinse a try, you can download rinse for free using the link below. Rinse will work for both Windows and MAC.
